The following ”in blue” is a consolidation of the replies I received to “My thoughts on Anaheim” so far, 5/3/07. Most of the respondents are “out of towners” and most prefer to stay close to TC and spend time together.

FYI I have been sending the mass emails out in 2 groups to those have responded to original email, therefore if someone replies “To All” it is really only going out to about half the total. That is why I am consolidating and posting here

I have a friend who works for one of the Cal. Race Track Unions.  She told me that Oak Tree will open at Santa Anita on Sept. 26 this year.

She said this means Oak Tree will open on Sept. 24 in 2008.  So Santa Anita Inn would not be an option for a Sept 26, 27, 28 reunion.

It sounds like most people want to go back to the TC area. The most important thing is that we have a place to enjoy everyone's company.  Arcadia Park is nice to picnic on Saturday and any hotel in the area that we can get a good deal for everyone is great. Santa Anita is closed until October so rooms shouldn't be a problem.

I am so glad to hear many of you agree Anaheim is not such a good idea.  I
didn't want to put my 25 cents in at first because I live in T.C.

My main complaint with the Santa Anita Inn was their plumbing and the
problems some of us experienced.  With the Saturday night event I have more
comments.  If we were to use them again I would opt for the buffet as
service was slow (some finished eating before others were served); as much
as I like Bruce and his magic, it was a bit long; and longer still was the
door prize ticket calling.  What I am saying is buffet, shorter
entertainment, and limit door prizes to 15 minutes.  Oh and Bart and
Sherrie have to learn when to leave the wine tasting.  I can say all this
because I was instrumental in planning that reunion.  If we decide to use
Santa Anita Inn again, we need to know when the track will open because
many of the jockeys stay there when in town.  I also think Pasadena is a
good option because there is something for everyone (including spouses not
really wanting to be with the TCHS crowd), is close to T.C., and there is
more competition for our dollars.

I did some checking about other parks in the area for a picnic.  Arcadia
County Park (Santa Anita and Huntington), has about a $500 fee to reserve
the big oak tree area and use of the kitchen - but it is nice.  Another
suggestion would be Wilderness Park also in Arcadia at the base of the
hill, smaller fee as it is not a county park.

I will go along with the majority, but I do think we grew up and lived in
T.C. and this is what out of towners want to see.  In a couple of years,
T.C. will have our own banquet facility (though no hotel) at the Piazza Las
Tunas...I should check when they think the Piazza will be finished.  We can
all cry over the loss of the Temple Theater.

-----------------------------------------------------

Jh almost out of town

How did everyone like the last location in Arcadia? We almost had the whole place to ourselves! And the grounds were large enough for the extra activities, and very close to TC and if we wanted a Park picnic, Arcadia Park was across the street, and TC park isn't too far.
If I recall(and at times that isn't right on the mark) we had a social the night before, next day tour of the race track, Wine tasting by the pool, then the party. Not a fancy place, but clean, pretty grounds and lush follage and convienent! Just off the 210 from the Ontario airport(fwys10-57-210), the new LAX-Ontario as they are advertising it. Almost an Hour drive from Orange County, and I'm not sure how far from Long Beach. With all the airports we have if one dislikes LAX there are many options.
Has anyone done business at any of the Pasadena Hotels? Lots to do in Old Pasadena, and still user friendly. And easy access from all the airports. Not far from TC.
Randy Aiken was or is a Policeman in Pasadena, did he reply? He would be a good source of info for the Pasadena area. If someone could get me his contact info I would be glad to contact him and pick his brain about the Pasadena area.

My vote is for a venue in or near TC. I especially like the idea of a picnic at Live Oak Park.... with invitations to the classes flanking ours.

I agree with all the points Bart made.  I worked at Disneyland in college and love going there, but probably won't go again 'til I bring my grandchildren. Coming from NH.  I would prefer to stay closer to TC and spend all 3 days with classmates.  I still like the idea of a picnic that we could invite other classes to, but it could be very casual.  Just everyone bring their own food - you can always get a picnic lunch at a deli or grocery store on the way.  If its at lunch time Sat. there is plenty of time to go back to the hotel to get ready for the dinner.

Jj out of towner

Hi Bart . . . I agree with everything you've written here.  Since I'll be coming from Atlanta, I'd like the whole deal to be closer to TC and I would like a venue like we had last time.  Now I know that the Santa Anita Inn certainly wasn't the Ritz Carlton but it was intimate and afforded the class the opportunity to commune and interact without a great many other distractions (it almost felt like we had the hotel to ourselves).  Those of us who attended the tour of the race track early on Saturday morning had a ball.  It was a wonderful experience.  And a group of us attended the races on Sunday (something I hadn't done since I was a young adult).

I vote for TC but, of course, will follow the group concensus whatever it turns out to be.

I agree with ALL of your thoughts and suggestions.  The dates give plenty of time to plan.  To me, other class involvement isnt worth the time and effort it will take to appeal to them unless anyone knows of a class that has expressed interest and they have people in place to get involved. With the age of most of our kids, a picnic on Sunday when most people need to travel home would be tough to create interest.  Something fun on Saturday afternoon would be good.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think I'm leaning toward one big event rather than a 3-day party.  Whether it be in Anaheim or a dinner, it doesn't matter to me.  But if people are flying in for the party and staying at the one hotel, then they can meet up in the bar on Friday night or re-cap the party at breakfast on Sunday.

But......I'm up for anything!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
mm:

Very interesting!

Anaheim....good thought.  Lots of hotels so they will "deal" and I have it on good authority that the months of May and October are the LOWEST times for Disneyland....so the end of September should be  a great time to get a deal in Anaheim....families back to school and too busy to go to the parks.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

Had another idea that might be worth looking into.  I had some friends who had a large family reunion last summer.  They had a picnic at Knott's Berry Farm (I haven't been there for years, either!).  There is a separate area and it is totally catered and includes admission to the park if you want it.  Although their family did several other things I was told this was everyone's favorite.

Since it seems like the majority prefers casual and they don't seem to care about music - it would be an easy way to have a purely social event with not a lot to put together.  Their family all stayed at an Anaheim hotel - there are so many that they were able to negotiate a good deal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

sc

How about a Saturday morning picnic brunch? Maybe starting about 10:00ish and ending officially at 1:00 or so?  We could make it a nice event and not cost an arm or a leg. Combining two of our meals together would make the money go farther for one nice meal. We can use the hotel caterers or an outside one for the set up and food or we could get by with food from Claro's or even Vons/ Pavillions. They both put out great salads and sandwichs. We could pick up chips and pickles/olives, etc.

After the picnic there would be sufficient time to allow people to see outside friends and family, sit around a pool, see a show, play golf, etc  Then get back together for a formal dinner in the evening.

The brunch might attract a lot of more local classmates that can't afford the formal dinner.

I don't think any event on Sunday should last longer than noon because that's usually check-out time which is crazy enough. A brunch on Sunday would do well also.

As you know I am hoping for a Fri night through Sunday morning event and I hope that, like the last time, we have breakfast Sunday morning with that time of reflection I had incorporated before or after. There were several good comments about it and many felt closer to the classmates

afterwards. Just a thought.

Hi All,

Its exciting to see all the energy already going into a reunion.
I like Mindy's suggestion of a late Sept. weekend and a hotel near an airport, although we stayed at the DoubleTree? in Pasadena for a conference a few years ago and it was very nice and not too expensive at conference rates. We would probably need a rental car to "explore roots in TC, etc." and we would need to carpool or have cars for a picnic even if the reunion is based at a hotel near a park. I love the idea of a picnic with or without '67 and '69 classes. My favorite park has always been Arcadia Park where we had a great Senior picnic, etc. but you probably have to reserve it for large events.

I am in touch with Sue N '67 who now lives in N.Carolina, but she travels to Calif. often. I haven't been to Calif. since the 2000 reunion, so will really be looking forward to this. Let me know what I can help with from NH and at the event or I can arrive the day before.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

jh

Good thing about Pasadena is they have excellent hotels for holding the reunion and motels for those who can't afford to stay at the hotels along Colorado Blvd.  We might be able to work a deal with one of the motels for special rates. But I don't think we need a five star hotel for the reunion either.

Agree we want to appeal to all class members.  Think the golfing was a big draw in 2000 and Pasadena has 3 or 4 courses, so we need someone to organize a golfing event.  A Sunday picnic will eliminate many because they will use that day as a travel day.  A Saturday day time picnic would work for our class but if we invite '67 & '69, they should also be included in the Saturday night event.  No one is going to travel across country for a picnic...it's too casual, no chance of getting dressed up (thought I don't get dressed up these days) and having photos taken for a souvenir book.  Formal Saturday dinner is going to cost closer to $90 or $100 per student/slightly less for a spouse (think we need separate spouse pricing).  I checked the Pasadena Chamber web site and full rate hotel prices are much higher than $120 a night.

I think we need to concentrate on what worked and what didn't work at the last two reunions and draw from the best of both worlds.  Santa Anita Inn was priced right, though we should have gone with a buffet instead of sit-down meal.  That would have shortened the dinner part of Saturday night, Bruce's magic show was entertaining but too long.  And the door ticket drawing took way too long.  I only know of two couples that only attend for the dancing (Chris D and Steve K, plus mates), no one else cared about dancing except because the music was so loud, you couldn't talk.  A separate room with a dance floor could solve that problem, but is it practical...I don't know.

All in all, I think we do need to set a date and city for reunion so everyone can start making their plans and start saving.  I was hoping Carol H would speak up for the working teachers, but she only mentioned she was semi-retired from teaching.  I'm not sure who is still teaching other than Steve E (who claims it takes everything out of him to just get through the work week and Karen O made the same sort of comments when she was teaching full time).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

jr

I would like to see it near Ontario airport.  I hate the traffic around LAX and the drive to TC is not usually pleasant.  Ontario is not a bad drive into TC for sightseeing.  The catered picnic sounds like a great idea because so many won't have cooking facilities.  The end of September can work for us if it is planned this far in advance.  Pasadena would be a good choice too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mm

Suggestion:

One way to do a "picnic" is to offer attendees an option.  IF they sign up and pay ahead, they'll get a ticket for a "meal" (catered Barbeque lunch or box lunch that is catered).  OR they have the option to "drop in" without pre registration and bring their own picnic basket or drop by a deli and [purchase a bag lunch.

IF you were doing a "mass" picnic, with a number of classes, this would offer the flexibility so those that can register ahead (our classmates and any other class that joins in "officially" but also those that hear about it through the grape vine or last minute can come too!

it should be at a very big park, with lots of tables that can be reserved.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JH,

I see Linda W P (67) weekly, she is the president of the TC Chamber
and organized the TCUSD 50th celebration and has many good contacts in the
area.  Local parks:  TC Park, next to library is still there, is small but
close to "downtown" that people can walk Las Tunas and see the city, AND I
personally know the Museum Director of the Historical Society of Temple
City's museum for a private opening.  Live Oak Park is much bigger, has
picnic shelter than can be reserved (I know the head of Parks & Rec and
should be able to get priority reservations), but is close to nothing.
Problem with picnic is most everyone is from out of town and picnics
usually involve homemade food items (am I living in the past, have things
changed?).  We have had "mini-reunions" at both parks and think Live Oak
was better as far as picnic facilities.  What do you think Bart?  Arcadia
Park at Huntington and Santa Anita is a County Park so reservations would
have to be made through the County.

I personally like the idea of the reunion being held local to TC, but I
live here and am prejudice.  Pasadena is a great place with many hotels and
lots of things to see and do for those who want to get away from the TC
crowd (like spouses), it's close to Burbank Airport and it is on the Gold
Line which goes into LA where you can connect to other lines to go to other
areas for $3.00 a day (current price).  The Gold Line is being extended
east but I don't know how far or when it will be completed.  San Gabriel
has a new Hilton hotel on Valley Blvd. but Valley is the busiest street in
the Asian community so not the best place to drive around.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jj

Dates Mindy suggested are great and I LOVE the idea of Pasadena.  Last time, it was really fun to be across the street from the race track and catch a quick bite at Marie Calendar's on Baldwin.  I did the whole tour of Temple City (and I hadn't been back in years and years).  It really was "visiting my roots" and I was touched by it all.

And I think we ought to contact the other classes and see if they want to participate.

That's it for me.  All else you decide is FINE. :-)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

bj

I THINK WE SHOULD GO TO ORANGE COUNTY

we have alot of class reunions at the various hotels in las vegas

I'll contact my friend, Sandi L from
'67... she was involved in the planning of their
reunion many years ago. I think that a '67, '68, '69
picnic would be a wonderful idea.  I remember a park
(next to the library) in Temple City- is this still
there?

I agree with setting up a date soon.  So far, any
month is fine with me.  (I'm a semi-retired teacher
with a flexible work schedule... September is fine for
me.)

Since I'll be flying in from Washington state- I also
like the Ontario Airport as an option.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ET

Hi all,

Per Janice's suggestion of looking at hotels near Ontario or Burbank airports.

Long Beach is another airport that we could consider.

Since I live in Ontario I would be glad to check out a few of the better hotels right by the airport.  I think all of you that haven't been to the area for a long time would be surprised how it has built up in the last 10 years and what the area has to offer.  (My favorites are the wineries.)  Also, Ontario to Temple City is a lot easier drive than LAX to Temple City if people wanted to visit their roots.  Of course, we couldn't set up morning surfing like last time!

I agree with Mindy that we need to settle on a date and make a deposit as soon as possible.  Unfortunately, at this time we don't have a good estimate of # of attendees.  Rates quoted are still based on # of room nights you can guarantee. (I'll just use 100 room nights as a guesstimate for comparison purposes.)

Is anyone still in contact with active members of class of '67 and '69?  I think the idea of a picnic including other classes would be great but we need to find out if they would be interested.  I'll call my ex sister-in-law who is now the senior secretary at the high school.  At one time there was an "Office of Alumni Affairs".    Hopefully, there still is.

The fun begins . . .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

mm

I took a few minutes to quickly read the responses and I think we should consider this a go.  I think the most important thing to nail down ASAP is the DATE and location.  For the reunion in 2000 we had the date over a year ahead of time (about a year and a half ahead .......).  To get a good hotel and a good deal on the hotel long range planning is necessary.

Given the responses I suggest the following (for whatever it is worth).

1.  Make it three days, two nights for those who want to attend the complete event.

 2.  Hold it either near LAX or Orange County airport in late September (better hotel rates than summer).  Make it easy for people to fly in and out of.

3.  Organize and price the different activity options, so individuals can attend one or all of the events.  Some people will come to all the events.  Others may only be able to make one event.

4.  Stick with the format of the last ones we had....

    - a casual cocktail party Friday night,

    -  events contained at the hotel on Saturday (people want to be together rather than sight-see).

    -  A dinner party Saturday night with music/entertainment

    -  Sunday brunch

OR what about a mixed class event /picnic (class of 67 and/or 69) Sunday 10 to 2 pm.

Having a mixed class event would take some work, because that class would also want to plan their weekend the same weekend.  But because we are starting so early, not a complete impossibility.

HOTEL:  As I was in charge of working with the hotel at LAX, here's what we found in 2000  when reserving the hotel:

They usually require a commitment of 100 nights to really sharpen their pencil and get the best rates.(i.e. 2 nights of 50 hotel rooms or one night of 100 or any other combination)  I think in today's market if we get a rate of $120/night at a four star hotel we'll be doing really well.  Elaine what do you think?

We have to make a deposit when we book.  Don't we have quite a bit of money left over from 2000?

If we book a city hotel on a weekend, you get the sharpest discounts, as they are usually business hotels -- crowded during the week but empty during the weekends.  Late September is not a big wedding time either.

Because most people main interest is spending time with each other, we don't have to have a fancy resort hotel with lots to do.  A first class conference hotel would be ideal in my opinion.

If we can find a NEW hotel, that is just beginning to make a name for themselves, they are more willing to deal as well....but you don't have a track record for the service, which is so critical to the success of any event.

I still believe that you cannot beat a Marriott hotel (or one of the members of that chain).  Everything is done to perfection and so organized.  They make it look effortless.

Once we have the dates and the hotel, we can give everyone over a years notice, so it gets on their calendar and it becomes something they can easily plan for.

So I'll throw this out:

What about September 26, 27, and 28 2008?

Once we have a date (and a back-up date) then the next step is deciding on location and hotel.

I am interested in attending a 40 year reunion next summer.  I'd prefer
August or September.  There would be 2 in my party.  I'd like a Friday
afternoon/evening cocktail get together followed by a picnic, lunch or

many.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond.
I would certainly try to attend a reunion. September is better for us because Mark is a busy tour guide at Hearst Castle (along with Marty's bro, Ted and someone from TCHS named "Hoppo") all summer.
If it is in the L.A area, I'd vote to hold a reunion in or near Temple City, so those of us who've moved away, can reminisce (and complain about all the changes). How about combining with the class of '67?

Meanwhile, I'd be happy to work on Search & Rescue. Please send a list of the missing.

Just wondering if you've gotten any more responses.

I did look into my 3 day cruise idea because I had a few people e-mail me directly that they liked the idea.  It was a bit more expensive than I thought because of summertime dates.  We would also have to book 50 cabins to really get anything (they were offering a private hosted cocktail party and $50 shipboard credit per cabin and 1 free person per 8 cabins).  It would end up being about $475 per person but it really would be simple to plan.

September would be the better month, July a second choice.  August 12 my son is getting married so we will be very busy.

The 3 day event sounds great but we would attend even if it were only one night. If it is near Escondido I would be happy to host something at my home if it were in September. I could help at the event, but planning before is hard now. … Hope you get a good response

Thanks so much for the update, I would love to help or be involved with our reunion, I still live in Temple City, so if you can let me know when things will begin to get going, I would love to be there.  Thanks again for the information.  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How great to hear from you again!!  You are so organized and we thank you taking this huge undertaking in getting the next reunion started.

Of course, I would be glad to help in any way that I can.  I don't know of any other classmates that you already know of so I can't help you there.  But you can include me in your organizational meeting if you have one.

I was a little confused with your email address.  At the bottom of you email you had your AOL email address but it originated from your Yahoo email.

Let me know what I can do.

Thanks for taking the time to enquire about a 40th Reunion.

Any summer month is fine, I am out of town every other week so I may only be able to attend 1 night.  I think, however, it would limit those traveling to only have 1 day.

I would bring my wife.

I may be able to help, but we just opened 2 new businesses in Las Vegas, so my time is limited.

Keep me posted for ideas or an initial meeting.

Yep, I'd be interested in attending a 40 year (do you believe it?  We're getting old!)

Me and a guest

September (but, in reality, any month is fine with me)

Coming from Atlanta, I'd vote for the three days

You can involve me . . . but, remember, I'm in Atlanta and can only do so much.  But I'm willing to help any way I can

Are you interested in attending a 40th year reunion next summer?  Absolutely.  If we know far enough in advance to arrange time off, air fare, hotels, etc.

How many attending in your party? -

What month would you prefer?  July, August, September - July

Would you prefer a one night dinner party or a 3 day extravaganza ( Fri, Sat, Sun) -   3 day extravaganza

Would you like to be involved?             In what capacity?  I now live in North Carolina.  If I can do anything from here to help, let me know.  We wouldn't be arriving in California till the week of the reunion.

What month would you prefer?  July, August, September - late September is ideal.  But if you let us know early enough, I'll plan around it.  If I'm still standing, I'll be there!

Late September you can usually get the best hotel rates.

Would you prefer a one night dinner party or a 3 day extravaganza ( Fri, Sat, Sun)

I think three days, because otherwise, people don't make the effort to get there.  Plan for three and let those that only want to attend one day, come for that.  We can be flexible.

Would you like to be involved?     Yes        In what capacity?  Something I can do from Santa Barbara.  I've had some eye surgery so don't drive long distance very often, particularly LA.  I like working on the hotel reservations and would love to work with Elaine - she's a pro....between the two of us we can get that done.

Do I have to reply to this?  Yes I will help out doing whatever I'm needed to do.  If I get lucky in the next year, I will be a party of two...but put me down for one.  Don't care what month.  Think the Friday night cocktail party has been a hit in the past and should remain a casual night tradition with Saturday night for the reunion dinner/dance/etc.  Don't think Sunday needs to be included, people need travel time to get home and ready for work the next day.

Like to go haven't gone since the very first one. May
be in Calif. during one of those 3 months most likely
August.
Like to do A one night dinner dance. Might be one me
or two with husband if he is in Calif. with me.  I
can't help with plans from here but would like to
attend.

Hi all,

Can you believe it's been 40 years!  We definitely need to get together again.

Personally I would love to see several years have a big to-do but I know that is a great task to undertake.

My other idea is a simple one - how about a 3 day cruise?  We could have plenty of time to get to see everyone, meals would be included and we could have a private party for the group also.  We could probably do it for around $250 per person which isn't that much different than a couple of nights hotel and banquet would cost.  I've run group cruises before and, of course, would be more than willing to help.  Just a thought!

As for month, I think we need to stay in July or August.  We still have a few teachers out there who haven't retired yet and September would be hard for them.

Hope to hear from you soon

Has there been any discussion about combining

Probably just me.

Either one... although, I enjoyed the 32nd reunion
because we had a choice of attending one or more
events.

Since I don't live in So. CA, it would be difficult to
be on the planning committee but I would be willing to
do "behind the scenes" work. (If decorations are
needed/wanted, I'd be happy to help.)

Sure, I'd love to help at the reunion itself, maybe also one day before or anything I could do from NH. I am not computer savvy at all except emailing.
